Sat in clique 4: See map for details. I thought my biggest concern would be finding a seat- clique four has always been the most popular for eighth grade- but we picked a good day. There was easy space.
Sat next to: kids all dressed in Aeropostale shirts and eating pizza.
Conversation:
Me- Hey, guys.
All- Hey Lauren!
Me- Is it okay if we sit here today?
All- Sure!
Jill- I have SUCH a busy day today. I have YoCA today- YOU have YoCA too now, Lauren! Right! I almost forgot! Come on- I need to get a cookie. You wanna go to the snack shack?
Weird looks: none
Asked to move: nope
Conclusion: There is a difference between a COOL clique and a POPULAR clique. Cool is elusive and self proclaimed. No one gets in. No one gets out. And they know they’re the best. ‘Popular’ means someone the school has picked to hoist up on their shoulders because they admire them. They are friendly, confident, and have no idea that they’re on top. There’s also a third category- of tag-alongs: kids in the Populars who got there by careful wardrobe planning and phone number connections.
Resolution: I don’t think ever starting a COOL clique will be a problem for me- BUT I should be careful to never come across that way. Then again, I thought every clique in the lunchroom was elusive. I thought making a seat at the Pop. table would take a reserved seating sign. Like middle row seats a the midnight premiere. But turns out the theater isn’t really as full as you think, and the tickets are free.
