Coming Up Next . . .
I'm so sorry- it's impossible for me to post on Tuesdays right now. Here's yesterday's field notes:
Tuesday, November 16
Sat with: clique #23- ninth grade girls
My friends Stephanie and Ellie are in this clique, and they actually invited me to sit with them today.
Conversation:
(I was pretty bad with names today, so please don't be offended if I call you "Girl #4".)
Steph- Hey guys! This is Lauren.
Girl #1- Oh, is this the one?
Steph- Yeah.
Me- The one . . . what?
Steph- I told them about your experiment.
Me- Oh. Got it. Hi guys!
All- Hey!
Girl #2- So, what tables have you sat at so far?
Me- Oh . . . I sat at the all boys table last Thursday.
Girl #1- How did that go?
Me- Not so great. Lots of stares.
Girl #2- Did you talk to anybody?
Me- Yeah, I did.
Steph- You should tell them- this is really funny, guys . . .
Conclusion: What I found most interesting about this table was how seriously these ninth grade girls took me, especially compared to how I treat seventh graders sometimes. They didn't treat me like I was younger than them or dumber than them or had "so much to learn", like I do sometimes with my younger friends.
Their attitude reminded me of my experience in the school musical last year: All the cooler, taller, speaking-role ninth graders were never too busy to talk to a sevie like me, or take me seriously. My sister's best friend, who I've all ways classified as "someone to babysit" will probably be performing in next year's musical with me- when I'm in ninth and she's in seventh. In comparison, I can't believe anyone with a driver's permit gave me the time of day when I was fresh out of elementary. Still, the ninth graders I knew last year, just like the girls I sat with today, were ready to give anybody a chance.
Resolution: Listen to what people have to say, no matter who they are.
